Goal Setting Thoughts
Goal Setting Thoughts
Why does goal setting mater:
The central practice of personal mastery involves learning to keep both a desired common compelling vision and a clear picture of current reality before you. Doing this will generate a force within ourselves called “creative tension.” -The gap between desire and reality. Tension, by its nature, seeks resolution, and the most natural resolution of tension is for our current situation to move closer to what we need-want-desire- the thing that brings energy to direction. It’s as if we have set up a rubber band between the two poles of our desires.
A simple way to think about goal planning is a goal is the difference between the desired future and the current reality!
People who are convinced that a vision or result is important, who can see clearly that they must change their life in order to reach that result, and who commit themselves to that result nonetheless, do indeed feel compelled. They have assimilated the vision not just consciously, but unconsciously, at a level where it changes more of their behavior. They have a sense of deliberate patience–with themselves and the world–and more attentiveness to what is going on around them. All of this produces a sustained sense of energy and enthusiasm, which (often after a delay) produces some tangible results, which can then make the energy and enthusiasm stronger.
Goal Setting My Thoughts adapted from Dave Cheong writing
That is, you must be able to articulate what it is about and describe it to others. The more vividly you can visualize your goal, the more committed you will be. What does the desirable future/picture look like to you?
Do not set yourself unrealistic goals. Not only is it a waste of time (because they are unattainable), it is also damaging to your confidence and well being.
You must be able to track your progress and definitively say if you have attained a goal or not. Generally, the more worthwhile the goal, the more difficult it is and the more time it will take. Therefore, every goal has a subset of little goals or successes along the way. Celebrate the little victories.
Every goal you set for yourself must be consistent with who you are, your overall objectives, desires, expectations and core values & beliefs. You cannot set yourself conflicting or contradictory goals. For example, losing weight is probably in contradiction to a goal to sample the best cuisines around the world.
I believe a goal should be challenging and worthwhile. The noblest of goals are compelling and energizing.Life is too short doing unimportant things. If you genuinely wish to improve your personal or professional life, set yourself worthwhile goals.
Not only is it important to have worthwhile goals, they must be goals you genuinely desire to attain. A desirable goal will command more commitment, dedication, fun and perseverance from you. This desire will be your motivation. Worthwhile goals make living life noble.
